Wrench Swinging Tenant Arrested During Apartment Inspection

Wrench Swinging Tenant Arrested During Apartment Inspection

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 900 block of Cedar Avenue around 12pm on August 5th after a reported landlord/tenant dispute which later changed to menacing with a weapon.

Upon arrival, police spoke to the leasing manager for the apartment complex and the superintendent. The manager stated that she and the superintendent were performing inspections on units throughout the day. Of note, the entire complex was notified that inspection would take place in accordance with their lease agreements.

The manager announced their inspection while knocking on the door of a unit and a male let them inside. Once the male noticed the female manager, he became extremely irate, started yelling, and called her a bit*h. Once the tenant started to yell, he picked up a wrench and started to swing it at the manager and superintendent.

Both then left the apartment and called the police. The female manager was afraid for her safety and wanted to press charges so she could obtain an order of protection.

The superintendent spoke with police and corroborated the manager’s account of what transpired.

Officers then spoke to the male tenant who was highly upset with the female manager as he was “never given a 24-hour notice of the inspection.” He said at no time did he pick up a wrench but only told them to get out.

When asked why he was yelling, the tenant said he was upset about a previous court case with the apartment where they were trying to get rid of him. He believes this incident is another attempt to do so.

Officers detained the tenant after he was “uncooperative” and due to the allegations made by the female manager, which they deemed credible. Officers assisted the male with finding his phone and wallet inside of the apartment and, while doing so, noticed multiple tools.

Officers brought the female manager back to the apartment where she pointed out the wrench the tenant had used, which was on the floor near the front door.

The male was placed into custody and transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. No further information is available - Wrench Swinging Tenant Arrested During Apartment Inspection.
