A morning walk on the Lockport Rail Trail turned into a nightmare for Laura Tomaszewski and her 6-year-old Rottweiler, Dozer, when a man shot her dog last Friday. The incident occurred as Tomaszewski was strolling with Dozer near Murphy Road around sunrise.
According to Tomaszewski, she noticed a person approaching them on the path who flashed a light in their direction. Moments later, she heard what she described as a gunshot followed by Dozer yelping in pain.
She heard a big bang and saw a flash of light. In the dim light of early morning, Tomaszewski was unable to see the man’s face who shot the gun, but she heard him mutter, “What did I do?”
She yelled at him for shooting her dog and he tried to argue, claiming Dozer was lunging at him. Tomaszewski said that he was on a leash, not barking, and far away from him. The man then fled down Murphy Road.
Dozer required emergency surgery for his injuries and is currently recovering. The bullet went straight in and out of his leg.
State police are investigating the incident, but it is unclear what type of weapon was used. In the wake of the incident, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover Dozer’s medical expenses.
