West Nile Virus Case Confirmed in Niagara County

The Niagara County Department of Health confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in the area for 2024. The infected resident is hospitalized and receiving medical care.

West Nile Virus, which is primarily transmitted through mosquitoes, often presents with little to no symptoms in most individuals. However, those who exhibit symptoms may experience mild effects such as fever, headaches, body aches, and skin rashes. In more severe cases, symptoms can escalate to high fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, and even paralysis.

Individuals over the age of 50 are particularly at risk for developing more serious complications from the virus. As of this year, there have been over 200 reported cases of West Nile Virus across the United States with more than 10 cases documented in New York State. Notably, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, was hospitalized with the virus in August.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites.
