Niagara Falls Police were working secondary assignment at Walmart on Military Road around 11pm on January 1st when a female was spotted pushing a shopping cart was heading toward the exit.
The female had various un-bagged consumable items in the cart. She passed all points of purchase and approached the grocery exist. At that time she was approached by an officer who inquired where her receipt was.
The female stated she did not get a receipt from the clerk. She was then asked to go back and get it while the officer stayed with the cart.
The female walked past all of the manned registers to the area of the general merchandise self-checkout lanes. Unbeknowst to the female, these self-checkout registers closed nearly three hours prior.
The female returned with a receipt she found on the ground that showed only five purchased items, none of which were in her cart. At this point the officer told her she was under arrest for shoplifting.
The female verbally challenged the officer and did not cooperate. Once she saw the handcuffs, she continued to refuse to comply with orders to place her hands behind her back. Instead, she hid her wrists.
The officer was able to get one handcuff on but the female locked her arms around the Subway metal grates making it difficult to place her into custody. Attempting to avoid detainment, the female would not let go. The officer called over another employee who assisted. Finally, she was handcuffed and led to a police cruiser.
She was transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. She was released with an appearance ticket. No further information is available at this time.
