A Hamburg woman had her right arm severed in a vicious pit bull attack just one day before the dog was scheduled to be put down, according to Cheektowaga police and a lawsuit filed by the victim. The incident, which occurred in early May, is currently under investigation and no criminal charges have been filed thus far.
Martha Yetman was assisting acquaintance Amanda Kieffer in cleaning out her late mother's house in Cheektowaga when the dog attacked her, as stated by Yetman's attorney, John Fromen. After being bitten, Yetman managed to escape by running outside, but not before sustaining severe injuries to both her right and left arms. She was immediately rushed to Erie County Medical Center where she underwent eight weeks of treatment.
In June, Yetman filed a lawsuit in State Supreme Court seeking damages from Kieffer. The lawsuit alleges that Kieffer is the owner of the dog. Yetman also sued Anthony Nobilio, the husband of the late property owner where the incident took place. The lawsuit claims that Kieffer and Nobilio were aware of the dog's aggressive tendencies as it had allegedly bitten other individuals in the past, including members of the owner's family. Despite this knowledge, the dog was reportedly allowed to roam unleashed.
Cheektowaga police confirmed that the dog was euthanized as previously scheduled at the owner's request. Captain Jeffrey Schmidt described the incident as an extreme animal attack, emphasizing that such severe dog bites are rare. Even with the dog put down, Yetman's attorney asserts that no amount of compensation can adequately address the life-altering injuries she suffered.
The lawsuit seeks to address the exorbitant medical expenses and the enduring pain and suffering resulting from the permanent injuries. The investigation into the incident continues and authorities are working to gather all necessary evidence to determine the appropriate course of action. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential dangers associated with aggressive animals.
