For over 220 years Niagara Falls has proudly held the title of 'Honeymoon Capital of the world'. The origins of which can be traced back to the early 19th century.


In the summer of 1801, Joseph and Theodosia Alston embarked on their honeymoon adventure from Albany to Niagara Falls. Theodosia was the daughter of future U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr. Accompanied by a retinue of servants and a small entourage of horses, they departed on a journey that would forever be etched in their memories. As they made their way through Buffalo their anticipation grew and, finally, they arrived at the awe-inspiring natural wonder of the falls.



A few years later in 1804 another notable couple chose Niagara Falls as their romantic haven. Jerome Bonaparte, brother of the renowned Napoleon Bonaparte, and his bride Elizabeth Patterson also sought the enchantment of the falls during their honeymoon getaway.


Initially, honeymooning in Niagara Falls was a privilege reserved for the wealthy elite symbolizing their status and prosperity. However, the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 brought about a significant transformation. The accessibility of the Niagara Frontier increased, allowing more people to experience the splendor of the falls. The introduction of railways further facilitated the influx of newlyweds making Niagara Falls a daily destination for couples seeking a romantic escape.



The allure of Niagara Falls as a honeymoon destination quickly spread across the nation. In 1841, the song 'My Niagara Falls Honeymoon' became a sensation solidifying the falls' reputation as the ultimate romantic getaway.
