Environmental Agencies Mobilize to Contain and Clean Up the Spill

A CSX locomotive derailed and crashed into a garage in Niagara Falls on Monday morning resulting in a significant diesel fuel spill. According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), around 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel were released during the incident.

The spill occurred when a fence post punctured the diesel tank on the engine car causing the fuel to leak. The derailment took place at approximately 8:15am near the intersection of Seneca Avenue and 35th Street causing immediate concern for the safety of the surrounding area.

Emergency response crews swiftly mobilized to contain and mitigate the spill. A vacuum truck was deployed to recover a portion of the fuel from sewer drains and the surface. Additionally, absorbent materials were utilized to collect the spilled diesel, ensuring that it did not spread further.

Recognizing the potential environmental impact, the Niagara Falls Water Board was promptly alerted and made preparations to receive the remaining spilled fuel at its wastewater treatment plant. This proactive measure aims to prevent any contamination of local water sources and protect the ecosystem.

The DEC has taken charge of the investigation into the cause of the derailment and will oversee the cleanup efforts. Their primary focus is to determine the circumstances that led to the incident and to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar accidents in the future. As the investigation continues, the affected area will undergo thorough assessment and remediation to minimize any potential long-term effects on the environment.

The cooperation between the DEC, emergency response teams, and the Niagara Falls Water Board highlights the commitment to safeguarding the community and its natural resources. The DEC will continue to provide updates on the progress of the investigation and cleanup efforts as more information becomes available - Train Spills 2,000 Gallons of Diesel Fuel After Crashing into Niagara Falls Home
