Niagara Falls Police were conducting a premises check of Tops on Portage Road around 10:30pm on November 27th when they were alerted of an active shoplifter inside the store.
Officers were given a description of the male suspect. He was quickly detained and found to have unpaid merchandise concealed in his jacket. All unpaid merchandise was recovered and returned to Tops with a value of $12.25.
The male was then escorted to the security office for processing. While conducting their investigation, officers were searching the suspect’s backpack and located a sealed container with suspected narcotics.
An employee from Tops told police that the suspect concealed the unpaid merchandise in his jacket and then went through the self-checkout, failing to pay for the unpaid merchandise. He then proceeded to pass all points of sale without rendering payment for the items in his jacket.
The suspect was transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. He was released with an appearance ticket. No further information is available at this time.
