Suspected Overdose Claims Life of Grand Island Man

A Grand Island man died on Friday, June 21st as a result of a suspected overdose, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to Grand Island at approximately 8:30pm after receiving reports of a 58-year-old man experiencing a medical emergency. Despite the efforts of medical personnel who administered multiple doses of Narcan and performed CPR, the man tragically passed away 45 minutes later.

Eyewitnesses in the area informed deputies that the man had smoked cocaine prior to the medical episode. This incident follows a devastating day on Monday where seven individuals lost their lives to suspected overdoses in Buffalo, Tonawanda, and Lackawanna within a span of less than five hours.

In response to these alarming events, the Erie County Sheriff's Office is issuing a reminder to drug users about the inherent dangers associated with illicit substances. They are urging individuals to be cautious and emphasizing that their products are unsafe. To assist in harm reduction efforts, the county is offering free fentanyl test strips, xylazine test strips, and Narcan.

Residents who wish to obtain these life-saving items can do so by calling (716) 858-7695 or texting (716) 225-5473. It is crucial for the community to take advantage of these resources to prevent further tragedies.

Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia also encourages residents to report any drug activity in their neighborhoods by calling (716) 858-7755.

By working together, law enforcement and the community can combat the drug crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

The community must come together to provide assistance and resources to those struggling with addiction, while also taking proactive measures to prevent further loss of life.
