The rare event unfolded in the early morning hours of July 9th, 2019, when Niagara Parks Police received a distress call about a person near the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Officers arrived to find a man hanging over the retaining wall above the 188-foot falls.
The man had slipped past the protective railing and plunged into the raging currents. Before authorities could react, the merciless waters of the Niagara River carried him over the edge causing him to plummet nearly 190 feet.
The Horseshoe Falls, named for its distinctive curved shape, boasts an astonishing water flow of around 6 million cubic feet per minute. The combination of this immense volume and the falls' significant height makes surviving such an ordeal almost impossible - even more so here because he was not wearing a life preserver.
