Old Fort Niagara invites you to step back in time on Saturday, December 14th, for an enchanting Castle by Candlelight event - a living history experience illuminated entirely by candlelight!
Celebrate the holiday season in the Great Lakes' oldest building. Visitors will embark on a captivating tour encountering historical characters who bring the past to life. Watch as cooks prepare a festive holiday feast over the hearth using traditional recipes and listen to a Native American storyteller share the rich history and culture of the Haudenosaunee.
Soldiers will be on hand preparing for a nighttime vigil to guard the fort while a Recollect priest reads the Christmas Story in Latin in our historic 298-year-old chapel. An 18th-century silversmith will also demonstrate his craft, showcasing his wares in the warm glow of candlelight.
The event features a variety of hands-on activities for all ages. Guests can learn to write with a quill pen, play period games, and create traditional holiday ornaments. Additionally, at 7:15 and 8:15pm the garrison will perform a spectacular nocturnal feu de joie, a dazzling display of musket and cannon fire that lights up the night sky.
To keep warm, visitors can retreat to the fort’s log cabin where hot refreshments will be available for purchase. Enjoy a selection of menu items including bread pudding, soup, hot chocolate, soft drinks, coffee, and tea.
Admission for this special event is $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased through Old Fort Niagara’s website at www.oldfortniagara.org. All proceeds benefit Old Fort Niagara’s educational programs, which serve thousands of school students each year.
