Spike in Coyote Sightings Causes Concern in North Tonawanda

In just one week, North Tonawanda Dog Control has received six reports of coyote sightings in the city and its surrounding areas, raising alarms among residents about their safety and that of their pets. Sightings have been reported in neighborhoods such as Forbes and Nash, as well as near Ward Road close to the Wheatfield town line leaving locals feeling uneasy.

Wildlife experts note that we are currently in coyote mating season, which lasts until March. During this period, coyotes are often attracted to residential areas by food sources including unsecured trash, pet food left outside, and even small pets.

To help deter coyotes, experts recommend taking action to scare them away such as opening the door, banging pots and pans, or yelling to make it leave. Throwing something in its direction can also encourage it to move on. It is also encouraged for residents to remove bird feeders as they can attract squirrels and other small animals that coyotes hunt.

While the increase in coyote sightings may be concerning for residents, it is important to remember that these animals typically do not pose a significant threat to humans in New York State, with reported attacks averaging less than one per year. It's also crucial to remember that coyotes can scale fences.
