For the one and only time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing and went dry on March 29th, 1848. On this day, strong winds pushed ice fields in Lake Erie into motion causing millions of tons of ice to become jammed around the mouth of the Niagara River. This resulted in the channel being blocked completely and stopped all flow over the American and Horseshoe Falls for over 30 hours. Although the American Falls was intentionally stopped between June 1969 and November 1969 when the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers dammed the falls to study possible actions to remove debris at its base, the Horseshoe Falls continued to flow during this time. 1848 remains the only year that Niagara Falls (the American and Horseshoe Falls) has stopped flowing and went completely dry.

The Buffalo Bills lost 24-22 on Monday Night Football to the Denver Broncos following a game-winning field goal. The Bills marched down the field to take a 1 point lead with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Bills' defense could not hold the Broncos and committed a costly pass interference penalty on a 3rd and 10 which put them in field goal range. On the final kick, Broncos K Will Lutz missed his first attempt. However, the Bills had twelve players on defense which nullified the miss. On his second try, Lutz put it between the uprights sending the Broncos to a win and the Bills to a second straight loss. The Bills are 5-5, two games out of a playoff spot, two games behind the Dolphins for the AFC East, and have the 3rd toughest schedule the remainder of the year.

The Buffalo Bills find themselves in a familiar place again - down at halftime. The Denver Broncos hold a 15-8 lead in large part to their defense forcing three turnovers - two INTs by Bills QB Josh Allen and a fumble by RB James Cook. A sloppy first half by the Bills, coupled with the Broncos scoring points off of turnovers, has put the team in a precarious position. However, the fastest speeds occur at the falls themselves where a combination of volume and height result in speeds in excess of 65 MPH. The fastest speed ever recorded was 68 MPH.

The name 'Niagara' derives from an Iroquoian word Onguiaahra which means "a thundering noise." This word was anglicized (made English) by missionaries who visited the region hundreds of years ago. In fact, the term 'Niagara' first appeared on maps as early as 1641. However, there are some scholars who believe the name Niagara derived from another native word meaning "thundering waters." Regardless, the theme is the same - Niagara means something powerful.

Niagara Falls is one of 26 U.S. cities across the country to be selected to receive a $25,000 Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The grant application was submitted by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls. It aims to infuse impactful community-driven advocacy and development in the North End of Niagara Falls by enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists, improving public spaces, and installing vibrant crosswalk murals at intersections. “We are so excited for this opportunity in the North End community, a neighborhood with a legacy of creativity, resilience and courage. It’s an extension of our ongoing work with the community to bring attention to the City’s Underground Railroad history and local stories”, says Ally Spongr, Interim Director of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, an organization working in partnership with the NFNHA and NF Murals. “This is excellent news. In our predominantly Black community here in the North End of Niagara Falls, active community participation in these art projects have enhanced a sense of pride, ownership and has given a voice to our community’s authentic identity,” says Saladin Allah, project coordinator for the NF Murals, the public art initiative of the NFNHA. The partnership of the NFNHA and the City of Niagara Falls has pointed to three specific locations that form a triangle in the North End: three major intersections connecting high traffic areas to the widely used Legends Park recreational basketball courts, the Niagara Falls Public Library, Henry Abate Elementary School, and the Niagara Falls Transportation Authority Portage Road Transportation Center. “As Bloomberg Philanthropies points out,” says Mayor Robert Restaino of the City of Niagara Falls, “Vibrant public artwork and smarter street design can inspire residents and have tangible impacts on improving safety and the lives of our residents. There is arguably no better collection of freshwater fish anywhere else in the world. Lake Erie currently has the largest population of fish throughout all of the Great Lakes. Although this is good news for locals and tourists wanting to fish, it is even better for commercial fishery where Lake Erie is one of the world's largest. In all, there are more than 130 species of fish in Lake Erie. Some of the most popular are the Walleye, Steelhead, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch and Northern Pike. On the other hand (or fin), Lake Ontario is home to over 120 species of fish. Some of the most popular are the Atlantic Salmon, Bluegill Sunfish, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Chinook Salmon, Coho SalmonLake Trout, and Largemouth Bass. With the influence of sex and destructiveness, things between George and Rose only get worse from there. Although the movie takes place in Niagara Falls, NY, the movie was filmed in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Marilyn Monroe stayed at the Crowne Plaza throughout filming, which which was called the General Brock Hotel at the time. The cabins featured in the movie were built specifically for filming and then removed afterward.

In fact, there are said to be over 1,000 species in Niagara Falls / the Niagara Gorge encompassing birds, mammals, reptiles, and more! Of them all, there is hardly a more popular animal at Niagara Falls than the black squirrel. At first glance one might say the black squirrel resembles the Eastern Grey Squirrel , which would make sense as they are in fact the same species. The only difference (as you can see) is black fur caused by a genetic mutation passed from generation to generation. The black squirrel is the rarest of all squirrel species - accounting for only 1 out of every 10,000 squirrels. For hundreds of years, Niagara Falls has been home to daredevils and death-defying stunts. Countless people have attempted to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, on a jet-ski, a kayak, and even without the aid of any flotation device at all. The first person to attempt tightroping across Niagara Falls was Jean Francois Gravelet, known professionally as Charles Blondin, in 1859. Blondin was a French tightrope walker and acrobat who rose to fame after his tightrope walk across the Niagara Gorge on June 30th, 1959. The location of his walk is currently where the Rainbow Bridge is, which is a few thousand feet away from the brink of Niagara Falls. In total, Blondin walked 1,100 feet. Blondin did not only walk this once, but several times afterward - and each time with a daring twist. Blindfolded, pushing a wheelbarrow, walking on stilts, in a sack, carrying a man on his back, sitting down halfway while he cooked and ate an omelette, and standing on a chair with only one of its legs balanced on the rope. It may be completely crazy to imagine, but it's true! Blondin will always be the first daredevil to complete a tightrope walk at Niagara Falls.

But the surprising truth is Niagara Falls is not that old at all. According to scholars, historians and geographers, the natural wonder of the American and Horseshoe Falls has existed for over 12,000 years, which in contrast to other landmarks across the world is fairly young. In contrast, the Giant Causeway columns in Ireland are more than 60 million years old. The first documented reference of Niagara Falls is said to have come from an account of Samuel de Champlain - a French explorer, navigator, and cartographer - in 1604. However, it is widely believed this was not a firsthand account and instead based on stories from native residents Champlain met. The first real documentation came over 70 years later in 1678 from French explorer Louis Hennepin.

Buffalo Bills all-time tackle leader Darryl Talley is coming to Cuba for a fundraiser event supporting Gabby Kranock, a Cuba girl who was paralyzed by a drunk driver in 2022. Talley will meet with fans and sign autographs as part of the annual Deschfest memorial fundraiser on Oct. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Palmer Opera House. The event will also feature comedy trivia from A Couple of N3rds, music from The Chumps, and a raffle featuring thousands of dollars worth of items and gift cards donated by local businesses. Admission for the evening is $15, while autograph tickets for Talley are $20 per autograph. Children aged 12 and under will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The Buffalo Bills lost 24-18 to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, November 5th in another disappointing offensive effort. Here's what happened: The Bills offense put up 7 points in their first offensive possession of the game before sputtering out the remainder of the half amassing only 37 yards. Things did not get significantly better as the second half started as the team was held without a touchdown in the third quarter. A touchdown in the fourth quarter made it a one possession game. Unfortunately for the Bills, an untimely turnover late in the fourth quarter - a fumble by TE Dalton Kincaid - gave the ball back to Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense who closed out the game. The Bills offense has been a problem since a victory over the Miami Dolphins in week 4. The team's record of 2-3 since then is a direct result of Ken Dorsey's spotting unit. Scoring in the first half of games has been a huge struggle. The team has been held to 7 points or less in four out of their last five games (Jaguars 7 points, Giants 0 points, Patriots 3 points and Bengals 7 points). The only game in which they scored more than 7 points in the first half was against Tampa Bay where they scored 17. Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey appears unable to lead Josh Allen and Co. out of their offensive slump. Head scratching play calls throughout the game, including a defiance to allow Josh Allen more freedom to go no huddle, has resulted in little to no improvement. Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott has no answer as to why the offense is unable to operate more efficiently, but acknowledged a problem exists. “There were times when Josh had time back there and maybe nobody was open," said McDermott, "but we have to wonder why no one is open when he has time.” The Bills find currently themselves out of a playoff spot after the loss to Cincinnati and second place in the AFC East to the Miami Dolphins. A win by the New York Jets on Monday Night Football would leave them third place in the division.
