  • Buffalo Couple Found Love in A Dumpster (literally)

Scavengers Find Love and Build a Family in the Most Unlikely of Places In a heartwarming tale of love and resilience, a couple from Buffalo has defied societal norms and found love and their happily ever after in the most unexpected of places - a dumpster. Dave Sheffield, 35, and his wife Erin, 39, first crossed paths while rummaging through discarded debris, and their shared passion for scavenging has only grown stronger over the years. Their unique love story began in 2009 when Dave, a college student at SUNY University at Buffalo, stumbled upon Erin while sifting through a pile of trash. Intrigued by her curiosity, he jumped out of the dumpster and the two spent the day exploring discarded treasures together. What started as a chance encounter soon blossomed into a deep connection, fueled by their shared love for uncovering hidden gems. Over the course of their 15-year relationship, the Sheffield couple has continued their dumpster-diving adventures, undeterred by societal expectations. Despite their modest income of $20,000 per year, the arrival of their first child, Evelyn, has not dampened their enthusiasm for their unconventional lifestyle. In fact, it has only added a new dimension to their scavenging endeavors. When Erin discovered she was pregnant in 2023, the couple's peculiar passion took on a new purpose. Determined to provide for their growing family, they embarked on a mission to find essential items for their baby. Their efforts paid off as they unearthed a cot, a baby swing, unopened bottles, and various other necessities from dumpsters. Their resourcefulness and resilience allowed them to create a loving and comfortable environment for their newborn daughter. Now, with Evelyn in their lives, the Sheffields eagerly anticipate welcoming her into their family side business. Erin, who also works as a charity coordinator, expressed her joy at seeing their daughter thrive. The couple found a portable crib for Evelyn, valued at $150 when new, in a dumpster behind a department store. Their determination and keen eye for discarded treasures have proven invaluable in providing for their family. While Erin has temporarily scaled back her scavenging expeditions to focus on motherhood, Dave continues to dive headfirst into dumpsters, unearthing hidden treasures and turning them into profit. With more free time during the pandemic, the couple honed their skills selling furniture, scrap metal, and other unique finds through online platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Their efforts have allowed them to generate an impressive $20,000 per year. Despite their financial limitations, the Sheffields have found joy in repurposing some of their dumpster finds as anniversary presents. From roses to coffee mugs, candle holders, and flower pots, their love is not only built on shared experiences but also on the tangible reminders of their unconventional journey. As Evelyn grows older, the couple hopes to introduce her to the world of dumpster diving, passing down their passion for repurposing and appreciating the value in discarded items. While their lifestyle may be unconventional, the Sheffields have proven that love knows no bounds and that happiness can be found even in the most unlikely of places. In a world consumed by materialism and excess, the Sheffield family's story serves as a reminder that true happiness can be found in the simplest of things. Their love, resilience, and determination to provide for their family against all odds are a testament to the power of human connection and the strength of the human spirit. As the Sheffields continue their dumpster-diving adventures, their story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us to find joy in the unexpected and to cherish the love that transcends societal norms. In a world where material possessions often define success, this couple has shown us that true wealth lies in the bonds we forge and the love we share, regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. • Man Pleads Guilty to Coercing Drug-Addicted Teens into Prostitution, Both Died

A Buffalo man, described by prosecutors as a former dangerous and powerful drug dealer, has pleaded guilty to charges of sex trafficking and coercing teens into prostitution. Steven Gonzalez, 48, admitted to coercing two drug-addicted young women into prostitution, including one whom he began grooming when she was just 12 years old. Tragically, both victims have since passed away. Gonzalez is already serving a 15-year prison sentence for his involvement in a narcotics conspiracy that resulted in an overdose death. He now faces an additional prison sentence of between 17½ and 20 years for the sex trafficking charges, to be served concurrently with his existing sentence. The plea agreement outlines the proposed sentence. Between 2012 and March 2015, Gonzalez exploited the victims' addictions to cocaine, heroin, and pills. He withheld drugs from them, subjecting them to severe withdrawal symptoms, unless they engaged in sexual acts with clients and handed over all their earnings to him. Although there was no trial, witnesses would have testified that they witnessed Gonzalez physically assaulting at least one of the victims. The prosecutors also stated that witnesses would have testified that Gonzalez intentionally kept the victims addicted to drugs to maintain control over them. The prosecutors further revealed that witnesses were prepared to testify that the two deceased victims had acknowledged engaging in sexual acts with Gonzalez when they were minors. During the plea hearing, Gonzalez himself admitted that "the girls were doing sexual stuff" and that they were buying drugs from him in exchange for the sex acts. Witnesses would have also testified that Gonzalez showered the victims with expensive gifts, including sneakers, clothes, and jewelry. One of the victims, who had been groomed by Gonzalez since the age of 12, stored drugs and guns for him at her grandmother's house. However, Gonzalez isolated the victims from their families and friends, controlling their contact with the outside world. Gonzalez operated a "trap house" in the basement apartment at 232 Richmond where several drug-addicted women were coerced into prostitution and drugs like crack and heroin were distributed. He also used his residence at 197 West Ave. for drug distribution. The guilty plea by Steven Gonzalez sheds light on the horrific exploitation and abuse suffered by vulnerable individuals caught in the grip of addiction. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of combating sex trafficking and providing support to those affected by it.

  • Niagara Falls - America's Oldest State Park

Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year, and it's always free to walk into the Park and experience the Falls! Today, the park’s signature attraction, the majestic Niagara Falls, is the dramatic apex of the free-flowing waters of four of the Great Lakes into the Niagara River Gorge. But that wasn’t always the case. During the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th Century, the natural beauty of Niagara Falls began to suffer as earnest industrialists built mills and factories along the river to harness its power. By the late 1860s, a small band of early environmentalists, including landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who were concerned over the river’s waning flow, founded the Free Niagara movement. The movement believed that the natural beauty of the land surrounding the Falls should be protected from commercial interests and exploitation, and remain free to the public. Members urged New York State to reclaim the Falls and the surrounding area. After more than 15 years of pressure, the Free Niagara crusaders won their battle. The Niagara Appropriations Bill was signed into law in 1885, creating the Niagara Reservation and signifying possibly the most important event in Niagara Falls’ history. New York State Assemblyman Thomas Vincent Welch was a prominent figure in getting the bill signed and later went on to serve as the first superintendent of America’s oldest state park. Frederick Law Olmsted, perhaps best known for designing New York City’s Central Park, believed that parks should be places of natural beauty, where “the masses could be renewed.” This philosophy was applied throughout Olmsted’s landscape design for Niagara Falls State Park, with an entire network of footpaths through wooded areas and along the banks of the Niagara River. Today, the oldest American State Park retains Olmsted’s vision by staying committed to maintaining native vegetation, preserving its unparalleled vistas and providing public access. Visitors from around the world are entranced by the thundering wonder of Niagara Falls, a grand tribute to the men and women who fought to preserve it for all. Want to plan a trip to Niagara Falls? • NYS Corrections Investigate Convicted Killer's Escape from Supervised Parole and Recapture

Edward Kindt, a convicted killer on supervised parole, is back in custody after escaping supervision in Dutchess County and evading authorities for nearly a week. Kindt was originally convicted for the rape and murder of Penny Brown in 1999. Kaitlyn Brown, daughter of the victim, expressed her outrage upon learning of Kindt's escape. “I’m exhausted. I’m irate. It’s unthinkable,” she said, struggling to comprehend how Kindt managed to remove his monitoring device and elude parole supervision. Kindt was on parole after a state panel granted his release in March of last year. However, it took several days for law enforcement and the Brown family to be notified of his disappearance. He was finally apprehended early Friday morning in Salamanca at a relative's home. Kaitlyn Brown criticized the breakdown in communication, stating, "There was a complete lapse of communication all along the line. He was not far from my house. He was loose for six days." She highlighted the difficulties in obtaining information from Victim’s Services, adding, "There have been some major, major errors made. I think we are all looking at that right now in a way that you can't look away from." Cattaraugus County Undersheriff Eric Butler echoed Brown’s frustration, saying, “I think frustration is a polite word for it. I’m angry.” He described the lack of prior notification as "very unique" and inexplicable. “There is really no explanation that I was satisfied with,” Butler added. According to the sheriff’s office, formal notification from State Parole came around 10 PM, informing them that Kindt had violated his parole by removing his GPS monitor and leaving his transitional housing without permission. Authorities then secured a warrant for his arrest as a parole absconder. Kindt's arrest at 1:40 AM on Wednesday ended his brief period of freedom, but it has left lingering questions about the parole system and its communication protocols. The investigation into how he managed to escape and the delays in notification continues. Based on independent reporting and WGRZ .

While working, the owner overheard loud yelling and the next thing he heard was glass shattering. Once at the room, officers observed a white female pacing back and forth with blood coming from her hand. The female stated she was "arguing with her boyfriend" when she stepped outside to get some air. The woman stated the door to the motel room was locked when she tried to get back in, so she began to knock as hard as she could to get her boyfriend’s attention. She said the window was hit by mistake. The owner advised police that he wished to pursue criminal charges against the woman for damaging the window, estimated at $500. Officers attempted to speak to the male, but he was uncooperative. The woman was placed under arrest and told police, “it was an accident, I said I would pay for it.” There was no corroborating evidence that the female was, in fact, the male's girlfriend. Based on the woman's behavior, coupled with the male's evasive behavior with law enforcement, she was likely a 'lady of the night.' She was transported to police headquarters for booking, processing and was released with an appearance ticket. • More Questions Than Answers Left as Niagara Falls Police Conclude Rainbow Bridge Crash Investigation

Niagara Falls Police have recently closed their investigation into a tragic automobile crash and explosion that took place on the Rainbow Bridge, claiming the lives of a Grand Island couple. However, very little was learned. The crash occurred on November 22nd when a high-powered Bentley luxury car suddenly accelerated to a high speed, launched into the air, and crashed into the Rainbow Bridge before exploding. The collision resulted in the death of Kurt and Monica Villani, both 53 years old. According to Mayor Robert M. Restaino, there have been no new developments in the case and the investigation is considered closed. However, it can be reopened if any new evidence comes to light. Restaino explained that the police faced challenges in determining the cause of the crash due to the destruction of the car's event data recorder, also known as the "black box," in the explosion. The destruction of the black box has left many unanswered questions regarding the incident. Police no longer have the remains of the Villanis' 2022 Bentley Flying Spur sedan, which is now with the insurance company that insured the vehicle. The incident was horrific for the witnesses who watched it unfold. Several individuals reported witnessing the Bentley traveling extraordinarily fast before striking a concrete median, flying into the air and eventually burst into flames near the inspection booths on the New York side of the bridge. The black box could have theoretically contained important details about the vehicle's speed and actions by the driver before the crash. There has been little to no updates on the incident from the family or any legal action. Regrettably for the family and public at large, there is little closure from the investigation. Based on independent reporting and from the Buffalo News
