- Mayer Bros Cider Mill Delays Fall Opening Date
Mayer Bros Cider Mill, a beloved local establishment, has announced a delay in its fall opening this year. Located at 3300 Transit Road in West Seneca, the Cider Mill will open for the season on August 14th, approximately a week and a half later than in previous years. The decision to postpone the opening was made to align with the start of the Erie County Fair and to better capture the essence of the fall season. Traditionally, the Cider Mill's seasonal reopening coincided with the commencement of the Erie County Fair, serving as a reminder that summer was drawing to a close. This year, store manager Samantha McGranor explained that they wanted to wait until after the fair's start to signify the beginning of fall and to cater to the fall market. McGranor shared that many customers expressed their reluctance to bid farewell to summer, stating, "Most of our comments are, 'No, we're not ready for summer to end.'" Despite this sentiment, the Cider Mill aims to embrace the changing season and offer its patrons a delightful fall experience. Mayer Brothers Cider Mill will still be the go-to place for a parade of fall flavors. In addition to the delayed opening, visitors to Mayer Brothers Cider Mill will notice a few changes. The exterior American flag bunting has been replaced with maroon, orange, and yellow flags, reflecting the vibrant colors of autumn. Furthermore, the Cider Mill has listened to customer feedback and decided to bring back its original pie recipe, adding to the nostalgic experience for longtime patrons. The popular frozen apple cider slushies, hot apple cider, and cider doughnuts will also make a return maintaining the same prices as last year. McGranor attributed this consistency to a successful apple crop this year, allowing the store to avoid outsourcing apples from other growers. While Mayer Brothers Cider Mill prepares to open its doors, other local cider mills are also gearing up for the fall season. With an abundance of apples from their own crop, customers can look forward to enjoying the same high-quality products that have made the Cider Mill a cherished destination for generations. - Alligator Spotted in Lake Erie Leaves Locals Astonished
Witnesses at Lake Erie were left in awe when they sighted an alligator swimming near the East Avenue Boat Launch in Erie, Pennsylvania. On August 4th, multiple beach-goers reported the presence of a 4-5 foot alligator, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Eyewitnesses wasted no time in contacting the Erie Police who promptly informed the Erie Port Authority about the unusual sighting. Concerned about public safety, the Port Authority has been actively monitoring both the water and land in the area. Fortunately, no further sightings of the alligator have been reported since the initial incident. Julie Slomski, the executive director of the Port Authority, reassured the public that necessary measures have been implemented to ensure everyone's safety. The Port Authority is collaborating closely with local trappers and seeking guidance from experts experienced in handling alligators. Signage has been strategically placed around the area where the alligator was spotted, cautioning visitors to remain vigilant. Reptile experts from the Erie Zoo have expressed doubts about the alligator's ability to survive the harsh Erie winter. Darren Julius, a reptile keeper at the Erie Zoo, explained that alligators enter a hibernation-like state called brumation during winter. As cold-blooded creatures, their metabolism slows down, and they rely on sunlight and heat to properly digest their food. Based on the estimated size of the alligator, Julius believes it is approximately two to four years old and likely sustains itself on a diet of frogs, tadpoles, fish, and possibly smaller mammals. The prevailing theory suggests that the alligator was once someone's exotic pet and was unfortunately released into the lake. Julius emphasized that the alligator is more afraid of humans than humans are of it. It is expected to swim away if approached within close proximity. However, it is strongly advised against attempting to approach or capture the alligator without professional expertise. The Port Authority will continue to maintain a vigilant presence in the East Avenue Boat Launch area as well as Lampe Marina and Campground. The Port Authority urges anyone who spots the alligator to immediately contact them at 814-455-7557 extension 223. Their dedicated team will promptly respond to any reported sightings.

The case, which involved repeated sexual contact with two children who lived in defendant's home, was thoroughly investigated by the Niagara Falls Police Department. Assistant District Attorneys Rob Zucco and Liesel Marcantonio of the Special Victims Unit prosecuted the case, working diligently to bring justice to the victims and hold Pearson accountable for his heinous actions. The allegations against Pearson were disturbing and too graphic to publish in full. These incidents occurred after Pearson moved into the residence where the victims lived. The victims were not related to him, but were the niece and nephew of a significant other that he lived with. Alarmingly, while in jail Pearson was overheard by fellow inmates confessing to lying with the young boy and expressing ignorance about the severity of his actions. "Their ma said it was okay for me to sleep with them in bed" and "I didn't even know it went in," said Pearson. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A STATEMENT OF FACT. IT IS WHAT THE CONVICTED FELON STATED. THE MOTHER DID NOT EVER GIVE PERMISSION FOR HIM TO SLEEP WITH THE CHILDREN. The lack of remorse and accountability played an additional factor in the sentence. The lengthy prison term imposed on Pearson reflects the gravity of his offenses and the lasting impact they have had on the victims and their families. - VIDEOS: Tornado Tears Through Downtown Buffalo Causing Significant Damage
A surprise EF-1 tornado with winds reaching up to 90 mph tore through downtown Buffalo on Monday afternoon causing significant damage to buildings, homes, vehicles, trees and more. The tornado, which occurred less than half a mile from City Hall, resulted in the closure of several residential streets but fortunately did not cause any reported injuries. Videos and images shared on social media depicted a funnel cloud moving through the Lower West Side and downtown area just before 1pm. The National Weather Service (NWS) officially confirmed the tornado approximately two-and-a-half hours later. According to the NWS survey team, the tornado originated at the shore of the Niagara River near the south end of LaSalle Park and the I-190/Niagara Street interchange. It then traveled inland for 1.4 miles and expanded to a width of 300 yards as it crossed Niagara Street and the Theatre District. The tornado's path concluded at the intersection of Tupper and Oak streets near the Rt. 33 off-ramp where two cars were overturned and minor roof damage was observed. Several structures were affected by the tornado. The Ellicott Center nursing facility on Carolina Street sustained damage, City Hall and Hutchinson Central Technical High School. Additionally, a three-story building on Niagara Street had its roof blown off, with the roof landing nearly two blocks away. This is in addition to flipped vehicles, torn trees, down power lines and residential home damage. Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo reported that a handful of other buildings on Niagara Street suffered damage as well. City officials noted that the tornado caused "significant tree damage," with approximately 50 trees affected and around 25 requiring removal. Efforts to clear trees and debris from roadways have already commenced and tree clearing operations are continuing. Although thunderstorms with the potential for hail and high winds were forecasted for Monday, a Tornado Warning was not issued. This tornado adds to a period of active severe weather in Western New York, as last month saw four tornadoes touch down on the same day when the remnants of Hurricane Beryl passed through the region. - Motorist Tries to Flee Traffic Stop on Motorcycle and Crashes Into Parked Vehicle
Niagara Falls Police were patrolling the City Market in front of Dollar General around 7pm on August 5th when officers observed a red motorcycle with two passengers. The motorcycle did not have a license plate, but instead had a temporary driver’s license taped to the rear of the vehicle. Officers activated their overhead emergency lights and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The motorcycle failed to stop and pull over, continuing to go northbound. As officers were advising dispatch of the motorcycle, the operator attempted to take a left on Elmwood Avenue and struck a parked Chevy Impala. Both occupants were ejected from the motorcycle when it crashed into the parked car. The male driver abandoned his female passenger and attempted to flee the scene. He did not get very far. Officers quickly apprehended him and he was taken into custody. Both parties sustained injuries. Medical arrived shortly thereafter to render first aid. While performing a search of the male, officers found a silver container with what appeared to be blue pills. Detectives arrived to take possession of the suspected narcotics for testing. If found to be narcotics, the male would be charged at a later time. The female passenger of the vehicle was found to have active warrants for petit larceny and was placed in custody as well. Both parties were transported to the hospital for treatment by AMR. The male was given an appearance ticket, as well as multiple uniform traffic tickets at the hospital, and released from police custody. - Wrench Swinging Tenant Arrested During Apartment Inspection
Niagara Falls Police responded to the 900 block of Cedar Avenue around 12pm on August 5th after a reported landlord/tenant dispute which later changed to menacing with a weapon. Upon arrival, police spoke to the leasing manager for the apartment complex and the superintendent. The manager stated that she and the superintendent were performing inspections on units throughout the day. Of note, the entire complex was notified that inspection would take place in accordance with their lease agreements. The manager announced their inspection while knocking on the door of a unit and a male let them inside. Once the male noticed the female manager, he became extremely irate, started yelling, and called her a bit*h. Once the tenant started to yell, he picked up a wrench and started to swing it at the manager and superintendent. Both then left the apartment and called the police. The female manager was afraid for her safety and wanted to press charges so she could obtain an order of protection. The superintendent spoke with police and corroborated the manager’s account of what transpired. Officers then spoke to the male tenant who was highly upset with the female manager as he was “never given a 24-hour notice of the inspection.” He said at no time did he pick up a wrench but only told them to get out. When asked why he was yelling, the tenant said he was upset about a previous court case with the apartment where they were trying to get rid of him. He believes this incident is another attempt to do so. Officers detained the tenant after he was “uncooperative” and due to the allegations made by the female manager, which they deemed credible. Officers assisted the male with finding his phone and wallet inside of the apartment and, while doing so, noticed multiple tools. Officers brought the female manager back to the apartment where she pointed out the wrench the tenant had used, which was on the floor near the front door. The male was placed into custody and transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. No further information is available - Wrench Swinging Tenant Arrested During Apartment Inspection.

James Miller, the director of public relations for the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, confirmed that the officers were taken to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) for evaluation and treatment. The incident occurred on Friday, July 26th, and was reported to the police by witnesses who observed jet skiers not wearing life jackets and operating in prohibited areas. Officers from the Niagara Regional Police's marine unit responded to the scene and witnessed a man riding a jet ski in an area that was clearly marked as off-limits to vessels. Despite the presence of swimmers, the individual continued into open water, maneuvering the jet ski between them. As he reached the buoys, the suspect allegedly accelerated and began weaving in and out of the majority of the buoys lining the beach in a slalom-like motion. The area where the incident took place is clearly marked with signs stating, "Private — no watercraft," indicating that operating any type of watercraft in the designated swimming area is prohibited. Ignoring these regulations, the 20-year-old man from St. Catharines now faces multiple charges. - Postal Worker Held at Knife Point During Robbery
The Town of Hamburg Police Department is investigating a robbery involving a United States Postal Service (USPS) worker who was held at knife point. The incident occurred on Friday around 11am on McKinley Parkway near Newton Road. According to reports, a suspect approached the USPS worker, displayed a knife, and demanded the keys that provide access to mailboxes and drop points in the Hamburg area. President David Grosskopf Jr. of the National Association of Letter Carriers provided details of the incident, stating, "She was approached by a man. She said he came out from behind the fence, and he brandished a pretty large knife and asked her if she was alone. She said she was and he asked where the keys were. She pointed to the mailbox, where they were hanging. The letter carrier did everything she was supposed to do from a safety standpoint. She didn't resist. She gave up the keys, and she got herself out of there as fast as possible. She ran to the closest home and asked the homeowner to call 911." Fortunately, the USPS employee was not physically harmed during the robbery but was understandably shaken by the incident. The robber took what are known as arrow keys, which are used to open cluster boxes and regular blue neighborhood postal collection boxes. While such robberies are relatively rare in Western New York, Grosskopf highlighted that they have become a significant problem across the country. He mentioned an armed robbery caught on surveillance video and the recent shooting death of a postal worker in Chicago. Grosskopf further explained the motive behind these robberies, stating, "What the thieves do is they will take the checks out of the mail. It's called check washing. They will wash those checks, put different numbers and their name on there, and then go to the bank and present that as a legitimate check." This type of fraud has become a concern as the stolen checks can be altered and used for financial gain. In light of these incidents, Grosskopf suggested that individuals consider using inside post office mail slots for mailing checks to ensure their security. Additionally, he expressed the National Association of Letter Carriers' desire for tougher penalties for attacks on postal workers who are federal employees. The Town of Hamburg Police Department is actively investigating the robbery and working to apprehend the suspect. Authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and report any information related to the incident.

- Lewiston Police Track Down two Suspects Who Fled from Traffic Stops
In a recent report, the Lewiston Police Department highlighted their success in apprehending motorists who attempt to flee from traffic stops. The department showcased two recent arrests that demonstrate their commitment to ensuring public safety and holding offenders accountable. The first arrest involved Kersarjo Nebaij, a resident of New Hampshire, who fled from officers at approximately 3:45am on July 26th. The incident occurred when patrols responded to a call regarding an intoxicated individual attempting to locate his car. Due to safety concerns, the officers discontinued the pursuit. However, through diligent investigative work the police were able to identify Nebaij by tracing his movements that night and recognizing his name when it was broadcasted by the State Police following an incident on July 29th in the Town of Niagara. Nebaij now faces charges of second-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, along with numerous traffic violations. He is currently being held at the Niagara County Jail on $10,000 bail. In the second case, an unlicensed motorcyclist fled from officers after being stopped in a supermarket parking lot in Lewiston at approximately 8:50pm on July 30th. Three days later, the North Tonawanda Police apprehended the individual, identified as Willard L. Schulmeister III of Amherst, on unrelated charges. Schulmeister now faces charges of second-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, first-degree criminal impersonation, and several traffic violations. The Lewiston Police Department was able to identify Schulmeister through body camera images that were posted on their Facebook page. During the traffic stop, Schulmeister falsely identified himself as a federal agent. It was also discovered that his motorcycle was unregistered, uninsured, and he had a suspended driver's license. The Lewiston Police Department emphasized that fleeing from the police does not guarantee escape from justice. While the chase may come to an end, the investigation continues and with the aid of technology and other investigative tools, law enforcement will make every effort to bring offenders to justice.

- Sadistic Male Violently Shakes and Mocks Screaming Child as Mother Watches
Niagara Falls Police were on routine patrol and performing a traffic stop on July 31st around 9pm when one of the officers observed a female, male and young child screaming across the street. The male was overheard shouting at the female, “the only way to get him to stop is to let him cry.” Officers watched as the male began to walk down the street with the child. He then began to “physically and aggressively shake the child” on three separate occasions that officers witnessed. The male would shake the child for 20-30 seconds. Each time, the child’s head would be violently moving back and forth, arms flailing and would become more upset each time that it happened. The male was also mocking the child each time he cried, pretending to cry louder and louder in a sarcastic, sadistic manner. Officers yelled to the male to stop but he did not listen. He kept walking with the child. They relocated to where the male was with the child at which point the female was running toward them shouting “that’s my child.” Both officers were attempting to get the male’s attention to have him let go of the child but he was zoned out staring at him in a rage. Police attempted to detain the male when he began to tense up and flail his arms. He refused commands to put his hands behind his back, but was eventually secured in handcuffs. At this point, he was placed under arrest and put in the rear of a patrol vehicle. While speaking to the female, she began to scream at officers. “You arrested my boyfriend,” she shouted. Alarmingly, she was not concerned whatsoever that her child had just been violently shaken by her boyfriend. In fact, she watched. The female continued to argue with officers and refused to give them her name. Officers relocated to their residence where an empty bottle of tequila was sitting on the porch. The female’s mother was present and police described to her what had occurred. The mother told her daughter to stop swearing several times and to get inside the house due to her aggressive behavior. While transporting the male to police headquarters for booking and processing, he spit on an officer. Once he was placed in the holding tank, the male peed the floor and began to throw up. He was unable to be fingerprinted and photographed due to being uncooperative. Child protective services were contacted.
