New York State Trooper Salvatore Mattina, a 10-year veteran, sustained serious injuries on Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle. The incident occurred in Niagara County when a Youngstown woman, identified as 69-year-old Anastassia Radell, allegedly failed to yield the right of way while exiting the Niagara Scenic Parkway northbound onto Route 93 in the Town of Porter.
The collision took place as Mattina's motorcycle, traveling eastbound, struck the vehicle driven by Radell. State police have confirmed that Mattina was conducting a safety run for the upcoming Dice Run organized by the WNY Riding Lions Club at Mercy Flight, scheduled for Saturday, September 15th.
Mattina was immediately transported to ECMC in critical condition with severe injuries while Radell was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with minor injuries.
New York State Police have confirmed that Mattina has a "critical and complex medical situation with multiple surgeries ahead" of him.
Mattina’s injuries include a brain injury, organ damage, fractures, internal bleeding, broken bones in his face, arm, pelvis, right leg and sternum.
Officials have clarified that intoxication did not play a role in the crash. However, an ongoing investigation into the incident is underway.
