The incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 19th, when the woman was observed intentionally entering the dangerous American Rapids. Officer Sibenik, who possesses extensive training in swiftwater rescue techniques, immediately sprang into action. Without hesitation, he plunged into the rapids and managed to reach the distressed woman in a matter of minutes. The PBA of New York State, the union representing New York State Park Police officers, commended Officer Nathan Sibenik for his heroic actions. PBA President Jim McCartney emphasized the increasing prevalence of mental health calls in the line of duty and the importance of law enforcement officers receiving adequate training to recognize and respond to these situations effectively.

President McCartney stated, "We are committed to protecting the public in any and every way we can – whether from criminal acts, responding to natural disasters, or facilitating access to critical medical services, including mental health treatment and suicide prevention. None of us are immune to the stresses and challenges of life, and when it becomes overwhelming, we strive to be a lifeline for the members of our community."

The incident at Niagara Falls State Park serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery of law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
