North Tonawanda Secures $4 Million Grant to Replace Historic Memorial Pool

The City of North Tonawanda has been awarded over $4 million in federal funding to construct a new aquatic facility that will replace the historic Memorial Pool, which was permanently closed in 2023. The announcement marks a significant step forward in revitalizing community recreational spaces.

Built in 1947 as a memorial to World War II veterans, Memorial Pool was designed by Michigan engineer Wesley Bintz who was known for creating over 100 above-ground pools across the country. The North Tonawanda pool was one of the last of its kind still in operation before its closure due to safety and deteriorating conditions.

The new aquatic facility will be located in Payne Park and is projected to cost approximately $8.2 million with the federal grant covering nearly half of that amount. North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This project is a major step in improving our community spaces for families and future generations."

The city previously secured a $750,000 grant from the state parks department to support the initiative. Plans for the new facility include two pools, a variety of water slides, shaded areas, and a pool house equipped with locker rooms and a concession stand. One of the pools will feature a shallow-water play structure for young children along with a large, twisting waterslide while the other will include several lap lanes and a diving well.
