North Tonawanda Crossing Guard Struck by Vehicle Released from Hospital

A 78-year-old crossing guard who was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday morning in North Tonawanda has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. George Snedden was injured just before the start of the school day at Ohio Elementary School around 9:15am.

Snedden was in the crosswalk attempting to stop traffic to allow students to cross safely at the intersection of Abington Place and Ohio Street when the incident occurred. The vehicle that hit him had been stopped at the intersection prior to the collision.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. He receiving traffic tickets before being released. Fortunately, no children were injured. Snedden was transported to ECMC for treatment and was discharged later that same day.

In response to the incident, North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec noted that the city had recently installed additional signs outside Ohio Elementary School to instruct drivers to slow down following requests from crossing guards. The city also placed "children at play" signs around all schools and playgrounds to enhance safety.

Going forward, police are increasing patrols around Ohio Elementary. Mayor Tylec emphasized the importance of community vigilance, stating, "We must, as a community, stay vigilant, alert, and considerate when driving near schools, parks, and other areas where children are present. While we’re taking steps to improve safety, it’s up to all of us to be mindful and ensure these areas are safe for our children."
