No charges will be filed against the juvenile driver involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of 13-year-old Leah Mayer in Grand Island this past September. The tragic incident occurred on the night of September 11th when Leah was crossing the street at the intersection of South State Parkway and Broadway. She was struck by the vehicle and died at the scene.
In response to the incident, residents have voiced their concerns about the safety of the intersection leading to the creation of an online petition advocating for the installation of a traffic light and crossing signals. Many community members have described the area as “unsafe” for pedestrians.
A preliminary investigation into the accident found no signs of impairment in the driver at the time of the collision. The suspect only received a single traffic violation for driving out of class.
Leah's mother, Amy Mayer, is expected to pursue legal action following the loss of her daughter.
