A Niagara Wheatfield High School football player is currently recovering in the hospital following a severe injury sustained during a game against Williamsville North High School on Friday night. Logan Senik, a junior, suffered significant lacerations to his kidneys among other injuries after a hard tackle in the second quarter.
Logan's parents reported that he was immediately attended to by trainers after the tackle. Although he managed to get back on his feet about three minutes later, his condition quickly worsened and necessitated emergency medical attention.
His mother drove him to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital where he was rushed by ambulance to ECMC due to concerns about internal bleeding and the potential loss of a kidney. Logan and his family received overwhelming support from the community after the injury by way of monetary donations and meals.
In a show of solidarity, every Niagara Wheatfield player will wear Logan's number on their helmets during the next home game. Many parents are raising concerns over the absence of ambulances on standby during games. According to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, there is no requirement for an ambulance to be present at high school games.
Logan continues to be in critical yet stable condition in the intensive care unit at ECMC.
