Niagara Falls Firefighters Extricate Male from Overturned Vehicle

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 400 block of 21st Street around 11pm on December 30th after reports of a rollover accident requiring extrication.

Upon arrival, officers observed a red Ford van overturned on its passenger side with one male entrapped inside. Niagara Falls Fire and Mercy Flight Ambulance responded. Based on initial observation, it appeared the Ford struck a tree and then overturned.

Officers saw a liquor bottle and other empty cans of beer scattered throughout the car. The male driver was extricated from the vehicle after the windshield was removed by firefighters. He was still conscious and did not appear to be injured.

After the windshield was removed, there was a sudden heavy odor of alcohol emanating from inside of the vehicle. After being removed, the driver had trouble walking and keeping balance without assistance. He had glossy eyes and had trouble answering questions.

Niagara Falls Fire took vitals and blood sugar which were normal. The driver was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center where he agreed to a urine sample and blood draw. He also agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed.

The driver was issued his Miranda warnings and given an appearance ticket. No further information is available at this time.
