Lake Erie and Lake Ontario - two of the five Great Lakes in North America - encompass over one hundred different fish. There is arguably no better collection of freshwater fish anywhere else in the world.
Lake Erie currently has the largest population of fish throughout all of the Great Lakes. Although this is good news for locals and tourists wanting to fish, it is even better for commercial fishery where Lake Erie is one of the world's largest. In all, there are more than 130 species of fish in Lake Erie. Some of the most popular are the Walleye, Steelhead, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch and Northern Pike.
On the other hand (or fin), Lake Ontario is home to over 120 species of fish. Some of the most popular are the Atlantic Salmon, Bluegill Sunfish, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Chinook Salmon, Coho SalmonLake Trout, and Largemouth Bass.
Fishing season is year-round across the Great Lakes. New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania give regular guidance as to which fish should / should not be eaten across the Great Lakes.
Happy fishing!
