The majestic Niagara River stretches 36 miles (58 kilometers) between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Its impressive route makes it a favorite destination among tourists. However, it is not just the stunning view of the river that will leave you spellbound, but also a number of remarkable and intriguing facts.


1. More Than Just a River: Not only is Niagara River a watercourse between two Great Lakes, but it also gives birth to the spectacular Niagara Falls - a set of three waterfalls renowned for their beauty worldwide. These three waterfalls include the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls in Canada.



2. Deep Rooted History: The river has a rich and ancient history. Native tribes of the Onguiaahra people were the first settlers in the area around the Niagara River. Its name comes from a Native American word - Niagagarega - the interpretation and pronunciation of which was destroyed by the French. The word signifies the 'thunder of water,' and true to its name, the river continues to create roaring sounds that can be heard miles away.


3. Speed and Volume: Niagara River is an impressive flow of water, boasting a speed of up to 25 miles per hour (40 km per hour) at its fastest and transporting 5,720 cubic meters of water per second at its peak flow during summer.



4. Role in Power Generation: The Niagara River is a significant source of hydroelectric power. The Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant in New York and the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Power Stations in Ontario are huge powerhouses, providing substantial amounts of electricity to their respective regions.


5. Rich Biodiversity: The Niagara River is home to a plethora of diverse wildlife. Approximately 100 species of fish inhabit the river, and numerous birds of prey are also known to be sighted here.



6. Historic Boundary: The river is an important geographic boundary between the U.S. and Canada. During the War of 1812, several battles occurred along the Niagara River which greatly impacted the development of both nations.
