Marineland announced this week the euthanasia of Eos, a beloved 7-year-old beluga whale. The procedure took place on February 5th at the Niagara Falls facility. The park shared the news via a statement on its Instagram account, describing the decision as a “humane” measure following Eos's prolonged battle with various medical issues.
In their message, Marineland expressed that Eos was a cherished member of their community, often referred to as “the cutest whale.” However, the statement did not disclose the specific health conditions that led to her euthanasia.
Eos's passing marks a somber milestone as she is the 18th beluga whale to die in captivity at Marineland since 2019. Additionally, three belugas that were sold to a facility in Connecticut four years ago have also died. The park previously lost Kiska, the last captive killer whale in Canada, who passed away in March 2023 after spending decades at Marineland since 1979.
The park's founder, John Holer, passed away in 2018 leaving the ownership to his wife Marie Holer. Following her death in September, a two-person interim board was established to oversee the park's operations amid ongoing efforts to sell the facility.
Last summer, Marineland opened for its 63rd season but did so with significantly reduced capacity, offering only a limited selection of attractions and no rides, restaurants, or land animal exhibits. Ticket prices were lowered to $14.95 for adults and $9.95 for children. As of now, the park has not confirmed its plans for the 2025 season, raising concerns about the welfare of the remaining animals in its care.
