A 19-year-old man has been charged after a collision on Niagara Street that occurred following an attempted traffic stop. The driver, identified as Demetrius Ferguson Jr. of Buffalo, allegedly fled from a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle at a high rate of speed, according to a spokesperson from the Buffalo Police Department.
The incident took place on Sunday, July 14th when police attempted to pull over Ferguson's Ford Explorer, which matched the description of a vehicle connected to a double-shooting case. Ignoring the police's signal, Ferguson sped north on Niagara Street running a red light and colliding with a vehicle at Virginia Street. The SUV then struck another vehicle before flipping over and hitting a fence.
Emergency services had to extricate Ferguson from the wreckage and he was subsequently taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed. During the extrication process, two firefighters sustained injuries and were also transported to ECMC. Additionally, a 30-year-old Williamsville man who was driving one of the other vehicles involved in the collision was taken to ECMC with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ferguson now faces multiple charges including second-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, as per court records. He has also been ticketed for running a red light.
