Buffalo Harbor State Park is set to undergo major improvements that will make it an even better destination for people of all ages. An update on the upgrades was provided by Governor Kathy Hochul's office on Friday, June 28th, revealing that work is already underway to transform the park into a vibrant and accessible space for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The $47.5 million project, expected to be completed by Memorial Day in 2026, will introduce several new features to Buffalo Harbor State Park. One of the highlights is the addition of a new splash pad, providing families with a refreshing way to cool off during the summer months. The splash pad will be located adjacent to a large Buffalo sculpture or fountain, adding to the park's unique charm.
In addition to the splash pad, the enhancements will include the construction of sculptures that will further enhance the park's aesthetic appeal. A café with retail space will also be added, offering visitors a place to relax and grab a bite to eat while enjoying the park's stunning waterfront views.
Governor Hochul expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are continuing to transform Buffalo's Outer Harbor Waterfront by providing more public access and creating a vibrant area for residents and visitors to enjoy." She believes that these additions will greatly improve the experience for all Western New York families and make Buffalo Harbor State Park a world-class destination.
The upgrades to Buffalo Harbor State Park align with the ongoing efforts of local and state leaders to expand the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Empire State Trail Gateway. This trail serves as the start and finish point of the 750-mile-long Empire State Trail, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from near and far. The enhancements to the park will further enhance its appeal as a recreational hub and attract thousands of residents and visitors annually.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown expressed his gratitude to Governor Hochul for her leadership and vision for Buffalo Harbor State Park. He sees this project as another example of Buffalo's growing waterfront and believes that the investment will have a significant positive impact on the community.
As work progresses on the enhancements, Buffalo Harbor State Park is poised to become an even more special destination on the waterfront. With the addition of the splash pad, sculptures, café with retail space, and other amenities, the park will offer a world-class experience for visitors of all ages to recreate, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking sunsets that grace the Buffalo skyline.
