An Amherst attorney, Jeffrey P. Santoro, 61, is facing criminal charges for allegedly offering thousands of dollars to the girlfriend of a jailed client in exchange for sexual favors. The accusations have led to a misdemeanor charge of patronizing for prostitution as detailed in indictment papers unsealed by a judge on Thursday.
According to Daryl P. Brautigam, a Fredonia attorney serving as the special prosecutor in the case, Santoro is accused of sending lewd photos and making inappropriate remarks during phone calls and text messages with the woman. One of these phone calls was monitored and recorded by an investigator from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.
The situation arose when Santoro, who represents the woman's boyfriend—currently incarcerated on drug charges— told her that the boyfriend would not be released on bail less than $150,000. When the woman expressed her financial difficulties, Santoro offered her money in exchange for "24 hours a day, seven days a week" sexual availability.
The special prosecutor commended the Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation, stating, “It would be hard for anyone not to be disgusted by the remarks made on the phone call and the pictures that the defendant sent to this woman.”
The woman, who approached law enforcement in April to report Santoro's conduct, did not engage in sexual relations with him but continued discussions while cooperating with law enforcement.
