The Buffalo Bills announced the return of their annual 'Coaches of the Week' award recognizing outstanding high school football coaches from Western New York. Each selected coach receives $1,000 for their team to celebrate the positive impact they have on their student-athletes.
In Week 2 of the season, Coach Chuck Nagel from Newfane Senior High School was honored after leading the Panthers to a huge victory over local rival Medina Mustangs by a score of 23-6. This win marked Medina's first league loss since 2019 - a notable achievement for the Newfane program.
Reflecting on the victory, Nagel expressed his pride in his team's performance, stating, "That was the best week of football practice I have ever had as a coach. Our boys competed, they listened, they were extremely coachable, and they are hungry."
He emphasized the importance of the win for a small-town program like Newfane, stating, "Medina has run this division for the last five years. It's a huge steppingstone to get that off our backs."
Nagel, who has led Newfane to Class "B" championships in both 2018 and 2019, shared his passion for coaching, saying, "I chose to be a coach because it allows me to be a part of the game I love, but can no longer play. It satisfies the competitive fire I have and allows me to help young people from my hometown learn and love the game as much as I do."
