The HEART Animal Rescue and Adoption Team in Hamburg is desperately seeking the safe return of a 4-month-old kitten named Newton who they believe was stolen from their shelter. The incident has left shelter workers concerned for the well-being of the missing feline.
Newton, who was available for adoption, was last seen in the shelter's kitten room on Saturday morning. The workers at HEART Animal Rescue have thoroughly searched the premises but have been unable to locate him. They believe it is highly unlikely that Newton escaped the room or the building. Kim Demme, who helps run the shelter, expressed her devastation over the situation, stating, "I mean it's devastating, especially for me. I've had him since he was 4 weeks old."
Demme took to Facebook 24 hours after Newton went missing sharing her belief that he was taken on Saturday. While animal thefts from shelters are common, this is the first time it has happened at HEART Animal Rescue.
The primary concern for the shelter is ensuring Newton's safety. Demme emphasized the anguish of not knowing where he is or if he is being properly cared for. She stated, "The not knowing is the worst part. If someone were to call us and be like, 'Yeah, I stole your cat, I'm not bringing it back, but it's safe,' I guess I would feel better about that than just the not knowing."
HEART Animal Rescue is urging the public to follow proper adoption procedures to ensure a good fit between the pet and the adopter, as well as to prevent animals from being returned. They want Newton to be returned safely - with no questions asked. The shelter requests that he be dropped off at their facility or any local veterinarian since he is microchipped. Anyone with information about Newton's whereabouts is encouraged to contact HEART Animal Rescue or the local authorities.
