Governor Hochul Signs Bill Permitting Big Game Rifle Hunting in Niagara County

In a significant move for local sportsmen, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Big Game Hunting by Rifle Bill allowing hunters to use rifles for big game hunting in Niagara County. The new law will take effect in about a month, enabling licensed hunters to pursue deer and bear with rifles throughout the county with the exception of the cities of Lockport, North Tonawanda, and Niagara Falls.

The legislation, known as Senate Bill S.8382B, addresses a long-standing restriction in Niagara County, which was one of only a few counties in New York State where rifle hunting was prohibited. State Senator Rob Ortt expressed gratitude for the bill's passage, stating, “I thank the governor for signing this important bill allowing sportsmen to take big game by rifle. County residents requested their elected representatives to get this done, and I’m proud to say we delivered.”

The bill amends existing Environmental Conservation Law permitting rifle hunting for big game between November 15th and December 7th. Assemblyman Angelo Morinello emphasized the importance of the legislation, noting that it not only expands hunting opportunities for residents but also has the potential to attract more sport hunting and fishing tourism to the area.

Niagara County Legislator Shawn Foti highlighted the support from local gun owners, stating, “Our Niagara County Gun Owners' Rights Advisory was a huge proponent of this bill because it expands the hunting experience in our community and brings our regulations in line with the vast majority of counties in the state, including our neighbors in Orleans and Genesee.”

The bill went into effect immediately upon the governor's signature and amends existing conservation laws at no cost to taxpayers.
