Firefighters from the City of Lockport responded to a house fire on Monday morning after reports of visible smoke coming from the basement of a home located at 1 Roosevelt Drive. The call came in at approximately 9:30am.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the basement. The homeowner informed crews that the fire might be located under the fireplace in the basement. He also mentioned that he had attempted to extinguish the fire using his own fire extinguisher prior to their arrival.
Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire which had spread within the basement. The damage was limited to minor damage to one floor joist and the subfloor above as well as some smoke damage to the basement and parts of the first floor.
The fire was extinguished after two hours. There were no injuries reported among the occupants or the fire crews. Investigators revealed that residents had used their fireplace the night before. There is a belief that the fire was accidental, potentially linked to an issue with the masonry. The estimated property damage is estimated at $5,000.
