Exploring the Ancient Secrets of Niagara Falls' Cave of the Winds

The Cave of the Winds, despite its name, isn't actually a cave. Instead, it’s a wooden walkway leading visitors closer to the majestic Niagara Falls. Named after the natural cave that once stood behind the Bridal Veil Falls, this attraction continues to offer an incredible, close-up view of the falls. The current walkway provides an impressive view and intense feeling of the forces of nature, allowing visitors to walk within a few feet of the cascading water.

Originally, the real Cave of the Winds was discovered in 1834 by Joseph W. Ingham, who named it because of the echoing wind sounds coming from behind the falls. This natural cave was about 130 feet high, 100 feet wide and 30 feet deep. However, due to several rockfalls over the years, the original cave no longer exists. In 1954, the last remaining rock formations over the cave were brought down due to safety concerns.

This notable attraction gets dismantled and rebuilt every year, as ice formations in the winters could potentially destroy the walkway. Workers start constructing the decks and walkways in the spring, which are then dismantled each fall. Each platform and walkway section is removed, cleaned, repaired or replaced as necessary, then stored away for the winter months.

Located on Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds takes tourists inches away from the waters of the Bridal Veil Falls. You can witness the power and beauty of this natural wonder from various points along the wooden walkway. There's even a section named the 'Hurricane Deck' where visitors are treated to tropical storm-like conditions due to the spray from the falls.

The Cave of the Winds operates YEAR-ROUND, providing ponchos to protect guests from the mist and splash. During the winter months, a special viewing platform is created where visitors can get a closer look at the breathtaking winter scene, while still maintaining a safe distance. Although temperatures at the falls in winter can be harsh, the spectacular view of the frozen landscape is absolutely worth braving the cold. Pricing is also cheaper during the winter months.

A visit to the Cave of the Winds offers an up-close encounter with the power and beauty of Niagara Falls. Be it summer or winter, the experience remains unforgettable for every visitor. The raw power of the waterfalls, combined with the extraordinary closeness offered by the Cave of the Winds, guarantees a unique, immersive, and awe-inspiring Niagara Falls experience.
