An alleged drunk driver collided with a New York State Police vehicle early Monday morning in Lockport, NY while troopers were in the process of arresting another individual for driving under the influence. The incident was announced by New York State Police on Tuesday.
According to authorities, troopers noticed a vehicle stopped and facing south in the northbound lane on South Transit Road at approximately 1:18am. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Richard L. Morrow of Lockport, was found slumped over the steering wheel.
Morrow failed several field sobriety tests and troopers detected the smell of alcohol emanating from his Dodge Charger. Morrow was placed under arrest and secured in the back of a marked police vehicle. He was charged with driving while intoxicated.
While troopers were concluding their investigation into Morrow's case, a Kia driven by 25-year-old Elizabeth M. Pursey of Buffalo struck the police vehicle at the scene. Pursey was taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated in addition to multiple traffic infractions.
Morrow sustained minor injuries and was transported to Lockport Memorial Hospital for treatment as a result of being in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was subsequently released on appearance tickets for a later court date.
The police did not provide an update on Pursey's legal proceedings. No further information is available at this time.
