Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced that Niagara Falls attorney Robert Koryl, age 69, plead guilty this afternoon to a series of felonies. Koryl plead guilty to two counts of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree and two counts of Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree. The money that Koryl admitted to stealing belonged to clients and was supposed to be held in Koryl’s attorney trust fund. Koryl admitted a restitution figure of $169,000.
Seaman stated: “When people go to a lawyer’s office to deal with complicated financial matters, they put themselves in the trust of that person. An embezzlement by a lawyer is not just a theft, it is also a violation of fiduciary duty that does harm to the profession as a whole.”
By his guilty plea to a felony, Koryl will lose his license to practice law in the State of New York. He also faces up to 7 years incarceration on the top charge he plead guilty to. The case was investigated by the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office and prosecuted by Special Investigations Bureau Chief Susan Bjornholm.
