Contrary to popular belief, Niagara Falls did not exist during the time of dinosaurs. The falls, in geological terms, are relatively young, forming around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago towards the end of the last Ice Age.
Dinosaurs, on the other hand, lived millions of years ago. The Age of Dinosaurs, also known as the Mesozoic Era, spanned from approximately 186 million to 66 million years ago. This era came to an end with a catastrophic extinction event that wiped out most dinosaur species. Therefore, the timeline of dinosaurs and the formation of Niagara Falls do not overlap.
However, fossils can be found in the vicinity of Niagara Falls, particularly in the rock layers that make up the cliffs and gorge walls surrounding the falls. Although the falls themselves are young, the rocks in the area are ancient. These rock layers consist of sedimentary rocks like limestone and shale, which often contain fossils.
Most of the fossils discovered around Niagara Falls belong to ancient marine life that thrived when the region was submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea approximately 400-350 million years ago. These fossils include trilobites, brachiopods, crinoids, and other marine organisms. While no dinosaur fossils have been found in this region, it is still possible that dinosaurs or their ancestors may have inhabited the area at some point. Unfortunately, they would not have witnessed the majestic falls.
It is important to note that the presence of these fossils does not mean that these ancient marine organisms coexisted with Niagara Falls. Rather, the sedimentary rocks surrounding the falls have preserved a much older chapter of Earth's history. In fact, erosion caused by the falls has played a role in uncovering these fossils.
