The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is investigating a gas spill in Niagara Falls, raising concerns among local residents who have been experiencing strong fumes for several weeks.
The focus of the investigation is United Gas Mart, 1038 Pine Avenue, at the intersection of Portage Road—a busy area in the city. Following complaints about odors coming from the local sewer system, DEC officials and spill response experts conducted an investigation late last month, which indicated elevated meter readings at the gas station. An underground inspection by the business confirmed the existence of a gasoline spill.
Residents have reported distress over the situation, noting that the fumes have permeated their homes. Many are worried about potential health ramifications.
In response to the spill, the DEC has employed a vacuum truck to remove the gasoline with cleanup operations taking place approximately once a week. The latest cleanup occurred on Friday morning. The agency has found no evidence that gasoline was deliberately dumped into the sewer system. However, it remains a possibility.
The DEC's investigation remains ongoing.
