A crossing guard for Ohio Elementary School was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday morning prompting response from emergency services. According to North Tonawanda Police, the incident occurred at the intersection of Ohio Street and Abington Place as students were arriving for the start of the school day.
The 78-year-old crossing guard was taken to ECMC for treatment following the collision. The specific injuries sustained have not been disclosed, but are believed to be serious. North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec addressed the incident, noting that extra “slow down” signage had recently been installed in the area at the request of crossing guards to enhance safety for students and pedestrians.
The mayor emphasized the importance of vigilance in school zones - especially during peak drop-off times. The driver involved in the incident is reportedly cooperating with the ongoing investigation and police are talking to witnesses to gain additional details.
