In a heartbreaking incident on September 6th, 18-year-old James Cook became the sole survivor of a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of his parents and two younger sisters. The tragedy occurred in the early morning at their home on Creek Road, leaving James grappling with an unimaginable loss.
As an EMT, Gina Wright was on her way to the hospital with James when he expressed his despair.
“He looked at me and said, ‘Hey, what am I going to do? My family's gone,’” Wright recalled. In that moment, she offered him comfort, assuring him, “We got you. We got you.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Wright has taken on a new role as a community leader - stepping in as president of the Tri-County Kiwanis Club. She mobilized support from local businesses across Western New York to organize fundraisers, including a recent event at Arcade Lanes.
The community's response has been overwhelming with over $30,000 raised in just two weeks to help James rebuild his life and pursue future education. Wright noted that support has poured in from across the region with calls coming in from as far away as California and Texas. A local family has even opened their home to James during this difficult time.
Reflecting on the outpouring of support, Wright stated, “What happened was nothing short of a miracle. It was hundreds of people within hours.”
James attended the fundraiser and expressed his gratitude for the community's kindness.
“I lost everything in that fire, and having all this support and people bless me with things that I lost, it's overwhelming, and I love it,” he shared.
Though the pain of losing his family is still fresh, James has found solace in the support surrounding him.
“Just because my family's not here, they'll always be here in my heart, and that's all that matters,” he said. “You only live once on this earth. I skipped death once, so I'm going to do as much as I can and give back to my community, because they gave to me.”
If you would like to contribute, donations can be made to the Tri-County Kiwanis Club or via Venmo at @Jamie-Emerling. Additionally, a memorial service for his family will be held on November 16th at The Annex WNY in Chaffee followed by a carnival-themed fundraiser from 1pm to 7pm. This event aims to honor the memory of his family while continuing to support James in his journey forward.
