The Buffalo Zoo announced the arrival of a new resident - an 11-month-old female red panda named Himalaya. After a smooth transition from the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina, Himalaya has settled into her new home in the Queen City.
Himalaya's relocation was part of the Association of Zoo and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which aims to protect and preserve endangered species. Red pandas, known for their distinctive red fur and bushy tails, are currently classified as endangered. The Buffalo Zoo hopes that Himalaya and Mogwai, the zoo's three-year-old male red panda, will eventually become breeding partners, contributing to the conservation efforts for this vulnerable species.
"We are thrilled to welcome Himalaya to the Buffalo Zoo family," said Lisa Smith, President and CEO of the Buffalo Zoo. "She is not only an adorable addition to our zoo, but also an ambassador for her species, which is in danger of extinction. Himalaya will play a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of conservation and our responsibility in saving wildlife."
Visitors eager to catch a glimpse of Himalaya can head to the zoo's Vanishing Animals North section. Here, they can observe her playful nature and learn more about the red panda's habitat and conservation efforts. The Buffalo Zoo encourages everyone to take this opportunity to witness the beauty and charm of Himalaya while supporting the vital cause of wildlife preservation.
With the arrival of Himalaya, the Buffalo Zoo continues its commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for endangered species. Through education and conservation initiatives, the zoo aims to inspire visitors to take action and make a difference in protecting our planet's precious wildlife.
