The Oswego County Sheriff's Office announced recently that the body of a man who went missing at Niagara Falls State Park over three decades ago has been identified. The man, Vincent C. Stack, was reported missing from Buffalo on December 4th, 1990 and believed to have gone over the falls.
His remains were discovered on April 8th, 1992, on the shore of Lake Ontario, specifically at Novelis Point, just outside the city of Oswego. Stack's journey from Niagara Falls to Novelis Point was a remarkable one. He would have traveled approximately 15 miles to reach the mouth of the river, and then over 130 miles across Lake Ontario over the course of 16 months.
Despite efforts to identify him at the time, the badly decomposed and mostly skeletal remains remained unidentified. In 2022, the Oswego County Sheriff's Office renewed their efforts to identify the remains. Through the use of DNA samples and collaboration with Canadian authorities, Stack was finally identified. The Sheriff's Office also revealed that they are actively working on several other missing persons and unidentified remains cases in the Lake Ontario area.
The identification of Vincent C. Stack's remains brings closure to a decades-long mystery and provides answers to his family and loved ones.
