A fire at a multi-unit apartment building on North Transit Street has left five adults and two children displaced according to the Lockport Fire Department. The incident occurred Saturday night, prompting a 911 call reporting visible flames from a first-floor window at 182 North Transit Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming through the windows on the side and back of the building as well as through the back porch. The unique construction of the building required extensive measures to extinguish the flames. The total estimated damage from the fire is reported to be $70,000.

While the fire was primarily contained to the back of the building on both floors, smoke, heat, and water damage affected the entire residence. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the residents.

Firefighters were able to rescue one cat from the building, administering oxygen to revive it. Another cat was found deceased in a second-floor apartment.

As an investigation into the cause began, firefighters reported that no smoke detectors were present in the building. An unattended candle being considered as a possible source. Fire crews were on site for approximately four hours.
