Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a crash that occurred on Wednesday night in Grand Island. The crash occurred around 9pm. Officials from the Erie County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a body was discovered at the scene.

Despite lifesaving efforts performed by a bystander, law enforcement and first responders, the victim was confirmed dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as Leah Mayer.

There continue to be very few details as to what happened. The Superintendent of Grand Island Schools Dr. Brian Graham released a lengthy statement just hours after the tragic accident unfolded. The entire letter can be found below.

Dear Grand Island Families,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected our school community. One of our precious 8th grade middle school students was tragically struck by a vehicle on South Parkway near Broadway. While I am not yet able to share the student's name, I understand that many of you have already seen this information on social media and are grieving alongside us.

Our hearts go out to the student's family, friends, and all those touched by this terrible loss. As a close-knit community, we share in the profound sorrow that comes with such a tragedy, and we stand together in offering our support and care.

Beginning tomorrow, we will have grief counselors and support services available at Kaegebein, the middle school and high school for students, faculty, and staff who may need help processing this devastating event.  We know that grief affects everyone differently, and our team will be available to assist in any way possible.

As we navigate this difficult time, please know that the safety, well-being, and emotional support of our students and staff are our top priorities. We encourage anyone who feels they need additional assistance to reach out to their school's counselors or administrators.

We ask for your patience and compassion as we come together to support the student's family and each other. In moments like this, it's important to lean on one another and provide the love and strength that our Grand Island community is known for.

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. Brian Graham
