13-Year-Old Fatally Shot by Police After Pointing Replica Gun at Officers

A tragic incident unfolded late Friday night when a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot and killed by a police officer after allegedly pointing a replica gun at the officers. The Utica Police Department confirmed the incident in a press conference on Saturday morning.

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, the initial reason for the officers stopping the 13-year-old and the person he was with has not been disclosed. However, when the officers attempted to stop the pair on Shaw Street at around 10:18 pm, the 13-year-old fled from the police.

During the pursuit, police claim that the teenager pointed what appeared to be a handgun at one of the officers. Chief Williams revealed that the weapon was later identified as a "replica GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine," which was actually a pellet gun.

In response to the perceived threat, the officer fired a single shot, striking the teenager. Emergency services were immediately provided at the scene, but unfortunately, the young boy succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The victim has been identified as Nyah Mway.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, following department policy. Their identities have not been released to the public. As per state regulations, the State Attorney General's Office will lead an investigation into the officers' actions to determine their justification.

The Utica Police Department has also initiated its own internal review of the incident. Chief Williams assured the public that the department is committed to transparency and will release the footage from the officer's uniform-worn camera in the coming days.

The tragic shooting has sparked public outcry, leading to a chaotic press conference disrupted by members of the public shouting at the police. The incident has once again raised concerns about the use of force by law enforcement officers, particularly in cases involving minors.

As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and seeks justice for Nyah Mway's untimely death.
